A Bond Beyond Medicine: Craig and Dr. Osipov
Most patient-physician relationships are built around diagnoses, treatments, and clinical decisions. But the bond between Craig Vittitoe and Dr. Arsen Osipov at Cedars-Sinai was different. It was a partnership rooted in mutual respect, a shared competitive spirit, and ultimately, a deep friendship.
The "Yes" Doctor
At 71, Craig faced a Stage IV diagnosis. Where others might have seen a statistic, Dr. Osipov saw an athlete.
"In our first meeting, he looked at me and said, 'Craig, the chart says you’re 71, but physically, you are much younger and stronger. I want to give you the full dose of chemotherapy we’d normally reserve for a younger patient.' It took me a year to realize how rare that was; I may have been the only person my age in the country receiving that level of treatment. Dr. Osipov stayed with me every step of the way, monitoring me closely as we fought this head-on."
That boldness changed everything. Through nearly 70 rounds of chemotherapy, Dr. Osipov became Craig’s "Yes Doctor." Whether the goal was a family trip or getting back on the pickleball court, Dr. Osipov didn’t just treat the cancer, he championed Craig’s right to live.
From Patient to Brother
Over dozens of appointments, the clinical gave way to the personal. Craig's warmth, infectious sociability, and "live fully" attitude left an indelible mark on the medical team.
During one Christmas visit, Dr. Osipov shared what everyone already felt: "You’re not just my patient. You’re my friend... my brother."
Craig felt the same. "He’s the whole package," Craig reflected. "A remarkable doctor, and an even more remarkable human being. When he looks you in the eye, you know he truly cares."
A Legacy on the Desk
Today, a pickleball medal sits prominently in Dr. Osipov's office. It belonged to Craig—a man who once duct-taped a paddle to his hand just to stay in the game, and who used his “gift of time” to tell the people in his life how much he loved them. To Dr. Osipov, his team, and his trainees, that medal is a daily reminder of the principles Craig embodied absolute strength, perseverance, and a refusal to give up.
Dr. Osipov still listens to a recording captured by Craig’s daughter, Ashley, in her father’s final weeks. In it, Craig speaks of their bond—a treasure Dr. Osipov returns to for inspiration.
"Craig defied the odds. He reset the statistics. And in doing so, he taught me lessons that no textbook, trial, or dataset ever could."

Why We Created the Vittitoe Fund
The Vittitoe Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund exists to honor this bond. We fund the brilliant minds like Dr. Osipov so they can find more "yeses" for more families, giving them the same extraordinary gift of time that Craig and his "brother" fought so hard to achieve.
